The Art Quilt Gallery NYC is exclusively focused on a single art form: quilts, whose aesthetic range, creative spirit, execution, and sheer beauty make this a compelling art, yet one that is rarely displayed in New York. We believe our patrons will be impressed with the range and quality of work. Opened on April 5, 2011, The Art Quilt Gallery NYC features the best quilts from around the world.

Southern California SAQA members Sandra E. Lauterbach and Deborah Stanley have been very busy. Both have fiber arts works featured this month at local galleries:

Sandra E. Lauterbach's work will be included in the 2012 Topanga Gallery Juried Show. The reception is on Sunday, January 22 from 2-5pm. The exhibition dates are January 11-29. Deborah Stanley was recently juried into the Showcase Gallery in the South Coast Plaza Village at 3851 South Bear Street, B-15, Santa Ana, CA 92704, across from the South Coast Plaza. Grace Errea will be teaching a 4-day class at Road 2 CA, Thursday - Sunday. The class is #4701 and it basically is to introduce her technique of applique and also work with the attendees from their photographs to create their masterpiece.

The artists' reception for Paradise Textile Artists was well attended Oct. 9th at Mission Trails Regional Park. This is the first time for the Park to exhibit textiles and they are very pleased with the interest and sales of our art. Federal, state and county parks are a whole new venue for textiles. We hope as artists that our work is displayed at all kinds of different venues. 41 members and guests turned out on a beautiful Sunday afternoon for the combined SAQA meeting and the "Art from Cloth" gallery opening in Thousand Oaks . During the meeting after a few general SAQA updates, we all enjoyed our "show and tell" session and exciting news from several SAQA members including Sherry Kleinman's inclusion as a featured artist in Martha Sielman's Art Portraits book coming out in 2013; Pam Price Klebaum's new PAM status and her sale of two of her marvelous quilts "Stetch" and "The evolution of an artist" (Pam featured in inset) and Sheila Frampton-Cooper being featured in the upcoming Quilting Arts issue highlighting art quilts. Way to go girls! There were many other member updates, too many to list. We're so proud of all accomplishments as they illustrate the growth of our group.

The "Art from Cloth" reception and exhibit was also great! 23 artists proudly displayed their works at the Thousand Oaks Community Gallery including several SAQA Members. Thank you all for sharing your talent with us. Special thanks to Eileen Alber for her key leadership with this exhibit and opening her shop "Quilter's Studio" early for us. Check out the detail of her beautiful handiwork also on display at the exhibit just below. Well done!

One week ago we set up the SAQA booth at Long Beach and had a wonderful four days. At the Festival Theatre we had many SAQA members lecture and give demos. Posted are photos of speakers, SAQA members, family members and other booths such as Visions and Quilts On The Wall. A big thank you to Sue Robertson for buying The Writing by Monique Gilbert. That was a wonderful surprise Saturday morning. Sorry Sue, you have to wait for one year to hang the quilt in your home.

SAQA present at IQF Long Beach

We just wrapped up four glorious days with our presence at the 4th annual IQF Festival at Long Beach. SAQA's two show exhibits, "Sightlines" and "Creative Forces" received rave reviews and the companion books to each exhibit we're also well received.

Several expert SAQA members including Karen Cunagin, Jake Finch and Mary Tabar as well as other faculty members, spoke at the Festival Theatre on various topics including "Color Theory and "How to get your book published". Check out the shot of Jake doing what she does best at the lectern.

A "BIG" Thank You goes out to all the SAQA members that volunteered their time at the booth. Mary and I so appreciate your williness and dedication to assisting our regional group. We worked well as a team and it really made a difference especially when there was a sea of people checking out our products at the booth. Just below are volunteers Linda Laird and Anne Copeland assisting a festival attendee during one of the more relaxed times. You can also see several of the 2011 Auction Quilts proudly on displayed at the booth. There was a lot of buzz about these attractive 12" x 12" quilts. Don't forget to tell friends and family about the on-line auction beginning September 12th.

International Quilt Festival in Long Beach, CA
Thank you for volunteering your time in the SAQA booth! - Please plan to arrive early to allow yourself to find a parking space if you are driving here. In the lobby - find the Volunteer Check-In Kiosk to get your name tag. You will need your Driver's License for this. Review the map and parking info in purple below. $10 to park.

Most of the shifts overlap, and it will be up to each shift of volunteers to train the incoming group. We will need 2 money people - 1) credit card/cash and checks 2) receipt writer. All instructions will be at the table. There will be a sign in sheet at the booth for you to indicate that you have worked your shift. We will be selling books and memberships, and hopefully some art quilts in the two exhibitions.

If you are working the opening shifts at Preview or on the mornings of Fri/Sat/Sun, please arrive on time. The doors to the Convention Center open at 8:00am, so if you want to get your name tag early, you can. You will need to show the guard your name tag to get down to the exhibit floor before the show opens to the public. Please go straight to the exhibit, and avoid the vendor area when the show is not open.

For people coming from Orange County and San Diego, the main highway from the 405 Freeway - the 7th Street exit is closed.

FROM LOS ANGELES INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT:
Take the San Diego Freeway (405) south to the Long Beach Freeway (710). Go south on the Long Beach Freeway to the Downtown Exits. (710 then becomes Shoreline Drive). Follow Shoreline Drive to Linden Avenue and into the parking lot, or as advised by directional signage.
FROM LONG BEACH AIRPORT:

Southern Cal SAQA member Melanie McFarland has been busy! She just  co-authored a new book with Mary Lou Weidman released just yesterday. It's titled, "Out of the Box With Easy Blocks." Melanie relates "It has simple projects for the beginner, and more elaborate piecing techniques, for established quilters looking for advanced ideas". Check out the wonderful, whimsical cover for the book. Way to go Melanie!

Also busy doing what she does best is Mildred Reynolds. While you're in Long Beach at IQF at the Convention center late July, check out some of Mildred's wall quilts that will be on display in the Landmark Bldg window starting this Friday, July 15th thru August.   Landmark Square is located at 111 West Ocean Blvd. Long Beach, Ca. The window is on the back of the bldg on First St. between Pacific Ave. and Pine Ave. opposite the Blue Line Station.

Saturday June 25, 2011 found 25 SAQA members at Mingei Museum. We had a great time seeing Bold Expressions, African American Quilts from the Collection of Corrine Riley. This exhibit of more than fifty quilts contained materials that were available between 1910 and the 1970s. Fabrics included wool, cotton, flour sacks, old blue jeans and work clothes. This exhibit has it's own genre perhaps labeled Improvisational Tradition.

Hello So Cal and Southern Nevada SAQA Members. I'm excited that the response for the Mingei International Museum Tour of the "Bold Expressions in African American Quilts", has been great. There will be about 20 SAQA members and friends meeting tomorrow at 1439 El Prado - on the Plaza de Panama San Diego CA 92101. We'll meet as a group outside of the museum at 12 noon. After our visit to Mingei, we'll grab some lunch either at Liberty Station or as planned at Tender Greens restaurant just down the street from Visions. Dear SAQA Southern California and Southern Nevada members,

We'd like you to enter our SAQA region’s first juried regional show. This is a super opportunity to share your work with others, and we want to encourage you. SAQA doesn't have many regional shows. Their rules make it pretty challenging to get one set up. We now we need your participation. If you haven't had time to make something, we think you probably have a wonderful finished piece or two at home that would be perfect for this show.

The theme is Sharing Stories: Expressions and Stitched Memories, which is really a broad theme. Every time we sit down to start a piece we almost always have an idea of what we are trying to convey—whether it is to develop an abstract image, experiment with new techniques, and/or create a landscape or memory piece about our families. All of these reasons can be seen as the beginnings of stories and the development of each quilt fleshes out the story.

The sizes are very doable, the minimum is 10x10”, and the maximum is 36x48” (portrait orientation—up and down). The photo submission part makes some of us nervous. How can we get past that? For people familiar with photos and computers, creating a jpeg is easy. Who do you know that has these skills? Ask for their help.

The jpegs for this show are due by May 1 to JWEAVERLING@frontporch.net They should be 300 dpi or 5x7 or minimum 1MB file size. No entry fee, no entry form. Just include the information, name,address, email, size, title…

Hoffman Fabrics Tour

We had the second Hoffman Fabrics tour April 13 in Mission Viejo. About 15 people attended the tour, led by Michelle Flores of Hoffman Fabrics. SAQA members in attendance were: Susan Slesinger, Marilyn Chaffee, Linda Stone, Mark Stone, Sharon Hightower, Mary Pavlovich, Alba Francesca, Irene Haydik, Eva Szilagyi, Carol Henke, Emily Wallace, Stacy Hurt, and Jamie Fingal. We had one member from The Modern Quilt Guild of Orange County, June Dodge.

Our tour began with a sit down to learn about the history of the family owned company, an overview of their fabrics, and a explanation of their Bali Batiks. Sample hangers of fabric groups were passed around the group to look at more closely. Then we toured the facility, a visit to their inventory area of all of the fabrics they have ever made. Watched a group of workers winding the fabric onto bolts with the assistance of a machine, but they guided the fabric, so there was just the right amount of yardage on each bolt. A quick trip to the design dept where the artists work, which was very interesting. Then everyone was given a diploma for coming - fabrics rolled together.

About ten of us went to lunch. Had a great time meeting new people and talking about art quilts.

Exhibit opens November 4, 2011 and closes January 22, 2012.

Art accepted for this juried exhibition will exemplify innovation in quilting and surface design techniques as well as excellence in artistic composition and craftsmanship. An entry is considered to be a quilt if it is composed of at least three layers that are stitched or fastened together.

Requirements:
Visions members may submit up to three (3) entries of high quality art quilts.
Entries must have been completed on or after January 1, 2009.
Only one quilt by each artist can be selected.
Quilts for sale are strongly preferred but Not for Sale (NFS) works may be entered.

How to Enter:
All entries must be submitted online at http://vaminterpretationsentry.com./
Entries must consist of one overall digital image and one detail digital image for
each entry submitted. Digital images must be saved as high quality JPEG images with 1800 pixels on the longest side.
Registration will open on June 1, 2011 and close on July 16, 2011.

Deborah Weir has a piece in SAQA Frontiers: Where Art Meets Science is opening at the Pfizer Corporate Headquarters in NYC this fall and winter then moving on to Visions in San Diego in 2011, and the Center for Disease Control in Atlanta (2012).

Pamela Price Klebaum's Silent Chain, Loris Bogue's Quiet--Homeless Sleeping, David Charity's House of Cardboard, Kathy Nida's One Paycheck and Sandra Hankins' Gimme Shelter have been juried into SAQA's exhibit, No Place to Call Home, which will be exhibited at the Mancuso shows running from August 19, 2010 through May 1st, 2011.

African American Quilts Exhibition and Performance coming to San Diego

BOLD EXPRESSIONS — AFRICAN AMERICAN QUILTS from the Collection of Corrine Riley opens Sunday, May 15 at Mingei International Museum in Balboa Park, San Diego and continues through Sunday, November 6.
The exhibition, which occupies most of the gallery space on the Museum’s upper level, showcases more than fifty quilts made throughout the American South between 1910 and the 1970s. Stunning color combinations and distinctively free patterns epitomize an artistic vision that is unique to the American folk art tradition. African American quilts, made entirely by women, are celebrated for their bold improvisation and modern take on traditional quilting patterns. Many of the quilts are made from materials that were readily available to the makers, including flour sacks, old blue jeans and work clothes and fabric remnants. This early form of recycling and reuse was a necessity that became the foundation for unique expression. The exhibition will also explore a variety of construction techniques and quilting.

Luana Rubin of e-Quilter is heading up a "Quilts for Japan" project.
eQuilter is partnering with Mission of Love to deliver one or more shipments of disaster relief supplies (medical, educational, and basic needs) and donated comfort quilts, to the people of Japan.
QUILT SIZE:
Small personal-sized quilts for a child or small adult. That could be from 46" x 60" for a child's cot quilt, to 60" x 68" for a lap quilt, or 65" x 85" for a small twin size. We'd like to request full/double size quilt as the maximum size. See our project page later this week for more ideas.

Community Project for Veteran's First

This is a sampling of a project that Jamie Fingal just finished for Veteran's First in Garden Grove for wounded Vietnam Vets. There are 22 house quilts in the project. Hoffman Fabrics Tour

Jamie Fingal has organized two tours at Hoffman California Fabrics in Mission Viejo for Southern California SAQA members.

Our tour dates are Wednesday, March 16th (FULL) at 10:00am OR Wednesday, April 13th (OPEN) at 10:00am. They only do tours during the M-F week, and not on the weekends.
The tour will last 90 minutes, so everyone should wear really comfortable shoes. Space is limited to 25 people for each tour.
We will plan to meet at Hoffman Fabrics at 9:50am, so we can all be ready as a group to tour their facility.

Pacific Quilt Artists is currently showing Nov.-Dec.2010 at Rancho Buena Vista Adobe Gallery in Vista, a site which holds about 35 quilts of various sizes. Gallery Contact is Carol Lang. They don't charge for a show or for entry to the gallery, but hours are limited Thursday-Saturday 10-3, Tue/Wed by appointment only. There are usually quite a few visitors to the Adobe proper who come in to see the Gallery, and the rangers are in and out but otherwise no attendants. We have shown there several times and have had no security problems. Free parking lot and street parking also.

San Diego is home to many master quilt artists who have created impressive contemporary works of artand have exhibited throughout the United States. Eight such artists are featured in a small invitational exhibition that demonstrates their talent and artistic vision.

Oceanside Museum of Art

This year the jurors were: Jason Busch, Curator of Decorative Arts at the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh; Linda Colsh, award-winning professional quilt artist and Studio Art Quilt Associates board member; and Penny McMorris, former Studio Art Quilt Associates board member, art curator and co-author of The Art Quilt, the first book on quilt design development. Penny has also curated quilts for John Walsh III, and for the Ardis and Robert James collection now part of the International Quilt Study Group. These jurors have selected 39 spectacular art quilts from 601 entries for a truly stunning show.

The jurors carefully considered entries from 270 artists from around the world. Almost half of the artists are exhibiting with Quilt Visions for the first time.

Oceanside Museum of Art is the host for this highly anticipated international, juried, biennial featuring the best of contemporary art quilts. A full color catalog of the exhibition will be available for sale.
