Part of NELAArt Second Saturday Gallery Night
Those of us who live in the North East section of Los Angeles recognize what a special place it is. For the month of October, we propose to make it even more magical by dressing everyday items found along Figueroa Street with varying combinations of fiber material. If you have ever thought to yourself, “Hey, that parking meter could use a sweater”, or “Wouldn’t knit flowers look good in that empty planting box”, then we have an exhibit for you. The act of Yarn Bombing combines the art of street installation with needlework to create colorful, unexpected, funny and sometimes political messages in a venue shared by everyone. Attach a handmade cozy or sweater to a doorknob, street sign, light post or parking meter post or create a garden filled with flowers, food items or other organic items.
This is a two-fold exhibition, and will also include a more traditional wall display inside the gallery. We are looking for all types of yarn art, and encourage both novice and expert crafters with open arms. We’d love to see works which draw on the rich history of Northeast Los Angeles, are funny, functional, use unusual materials and/or push the knit/crochet envelope.
We have scheduled a of North Figueroa Street for participants to choose their locations for Saturday, June 19th. Participants will meet at Future Studio between 12 noon and 2pm. Each session will start with a quick orientation and there will be maps available of the qualifying street objects. Locations will be granted on a first-come first-serve basis.
There is a Stitch “N” Bitch group which meets every Friday from 4 – 6pm at the Xokolatl Café located at 4987 North Huntington Drive, in El Sereno.
Future Studio will also host a group knit-fest the 3rd Saturday of each month from 12 -3pm (Jul 17th, Aug 14th, Sep 18th). We can share materials and ideas, and pitch in for pizza. This would be a great time to finally get rid of that excess yarn you have been collecting for years, share a technique, such as working with plastic bags, and gossip about anything you heart desires.
The next time you are at Future Studio pick up a copy of Yarn Bombing, The Art of Crochet and Knit Graffiti, by Mandy Moore and Leanne Prain
If you have yarn to share, the walk-through would an excellent time to start our yarn-swap.FOR INFO: Contact Heather Hoggan @323.258.1240, or www.arroyoartscollective.org
